WHAT IS ART DECO?

ART DECO is a style of design and decoration that reached its peak between the two world wars in the northern hemisphere but continued into the forties in NZ. Its name derives from the Expostion des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels in Paris.
The term ART DECO is used to describe, in somewhat simplified terms, the diverse developments that took place in the world of design during that time. The end of World War 1 heralded the birth of a new society with changing values and attitudes. Post wars years saw an emancipated woman, earning her own money, who was ready to embark on an independent life and break with the traditional constraints of society.
Leading sculptors, artists and designers portrayed her dressed in fashionable clothes engaged in the new activities of the day such as golf and tennis, driving fast cars or merely smoking a cigarette.
ART DECO style was more vibrant, more stylized, and often used materials unused before.
ART DECO heralded a break with all things that had gone before. A new freedom of design and construction began - buildings, furniture , fashion , interior design , automobiles, trains and planes all rushed towards a bright new future

The Art Deco Society Auckland (Inc).

The Art Deco Society Auckland (Inc) was founded by a group of like minded people in 1996. The object of the Society is to preserve, restore and rejoice in all things Art Deco.
Our members come from all walks of life and have diverse interests and expertise. Many of members travel to other Art Deco centres in New Zealand and overseas. The Art Deco Society publishes ‘The Metropolitan Flyer’ the official magazine for the society and distributes 2 monthly Updates on future events.
